Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.
This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.
If you ever played Papyrus’ seminal Grand Prix Legends then you’ve read his name. Rich began working as a tester on NASCAR Racing (1994) and was with Papyrus at the end. In this interview, published in 2022, we discuss his time at the legendary studio and the design of Grand Prix Legends, including initial feelings of hurt at not being asked to join iRacing.
Studio 397 today published their July, 2021 roadmap. Here are the main items of info that are new:
– A new car will be announced in August. Licensing issues prevented announcement in-time for the roadmap.
– Competition system will get a form of driver ratings within the next month as a part of a larger rollout.
– Driver swap functionality is due to be improved with a recent collation of community feedback and focus on them by the development team.
– The ‘set to 64’ sound settings issue has caused the team to look more at how the UI adjusts settings and saves them. A fix for this and a number of other newly-discovered similar issues will be in the upcoming release candidate.
– Overlays (used in broadcasts and livestreams mainly) are going to pull more data such as DRS being open and tire compounds. The overlays will also be able to cycle through information screens and let you select which.
– Shadows are going to be an upcoming focus of graphics development.
– An existing track is getting a PBR update, but they don’t say which. It was a “sizable undertaking” to do.
– USF2000 car is getting a PBR update next month.
– All the Tatuus open-wheelers will be updated early next month. They mention them being “more enjoyable to drive” due to physics changes, and audio improvements.
– Driver helmets will start to support PBR shading soon, with brand-new easy to use template.
– Helmet variations are coming. This means all AI won’t have the same old ISI-produced helmet anymore (screens below).
– New Corvette C6 safety car coming.
