An Interview with Terence Groening; Master of Physics

Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.

This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.

11 software titles indexed starting from 1999.

Originally working in military simulator design, this Michigan-based studio developed Zone Raiders for Virgin Interactive before moving to Electronic Arts for publishing their second PC title, Sports Car GT, when Westwood Studios (their SCGT development partner) was acquired by the software giant.

Known primarily for their mod-friendly SCGT and rFactor racing platforms, ISI also developed Formula One and NASCAR titles on PC for Electronic Arts, but perhaps their lasting contribution to the genre was the licensing of the isiMotor engine that allowed studios such as 2Pez, Blimey! Games, KW Studios, Motorsport Games, Reiza Studios, SIMBIN Studios, Slightly Mad Studios, The Sim Factory, Tiburon and rFactor 2‘s ongoing developer Studio 397 to begin with or release on an evolution of their software.

Another fork of the isiMotor engine, rFpro, continues to be developed and is used by a wide array of automotive companies for both road and motorsport simulation.

Studio 397 today deployed their first major update of 2022 and it includes the entirely new UI which should greatly improve the first impressions many have of the sim as a whole. There are a series of videos I have included below which walk you through each section of the UI, but I think my favorite is the new showroom and the fact content purchasing can now be done from within the simulation rather than on the Steam Web site.

Regarding the IndyCar, check out this tweet and the image below showing an Indy car that certainly isn’t a Dallara DW12.

Here are the build notes (note the top line, IndyCar fans):

Client: 8092611
Dedicated Server: 8092617

Added Push-to-Pass and Weight Jacker.
Custom controller profiles no longer save with -80% exaggerate yaw.
Yaw override in controller profiles defaults to being disabled unless added manually.
Official controller profiles have been updated to override this to 0% for all steering wheels, among other override changes.
Reviewed Glare Settings to reduce excessive brightness in day, and improve headlights at night.
Some small adjustments to Lighting Parameters, to bring warmer hues to the scene.
Improved windscreen rain effects and external car glass specular
Fixed stutters in replay monitor.
Driver labels re-enabled, updated with new behaviour and style.

Obviously it’s best to check out the new UI for yourself, but these videos do a great job of showing how things work as well:
