Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.
This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.
As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.
Fanatec have announced availability of their QR2 quick release system for those of you who either need to remove the rim to exit your cockpit or like to change them for different car types. Prices vary, and you can see them all on the Fanatec Web site.

It’s finally here… we are thrilled to present the QR2! Our new quick release system is a significant milestone for the Fanatec ecosystem that we have taken extra time to perfect.
What is the QR2?
This is a fundamental upgrade to the way our Steering Wheels connect to our Wheel Bases. Developed to meet the demands of real-world motorsport, the QR2 was first used in the 2022 BMW M4 GT3. It has since seen further refinements for sim racing.
Why did it take so long?
Motorsport-grade quick releases are normally manufactured in small quantities, and our demands for mass production are very different. It took a huge engineering effort to develop a design that could be made in three different ways: fully CNC milled from billet aluminium for the Pro, diecast aluminium for the regular, and carbon fibre-reinforced composite for the Lite.
Why should I upgrade?
QR2 is a major improvement over the QR1 in terms of strength, stability, ease of use, and precision fit. You should also find a reduction in mechanical noise while driving, and an improvement in force feedback detail. QR2-equipped wheels can be attached to a Fanatec Wheel Base without touching the spring-loaded sleeve mechanism, making it quicker and easier to start racing. The new design also makes the electronic connection for data and power more secure.
Are my existing Fanatec products compatible?
If your Wheel Base and Steering Wheel have an exchangeable quick release, then yes! Please check the Fanatec website for all the compatibility details.
