Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?
Originally working in military simulator design, this Michigan-based studio developed Zone Raiders for Virgin Interactive before moving to Electronic Arts for publishing their second PC title, Sports Car GT, when Westwood Studios (their SCGT development partner) was acquired by the software giant.
Known primarily for their mod-friendly SCGT and rFactor racing platforms, ISI also developed Formula One and NASCAR titles on PC for Electronic Arts, but perhaps their lasting contribution to the genre was the licensing of the isiMotor engine that allowed studios such as 2Pez, Blimey! Games, KW Studios, Motorsport Games, Reiza Studios, SIMBIN Studios, Slightly Mad Studios, The Sim Factory, Tiburon and rFactor 2‘s ongoing developer Studio 397 to begin with or release on an evolution of their software.
Another fork of the isiMotor engine, rFpro, continues to be developed and is used by a wide array of automotive companies for both road and motorsport simulation.

Kylotonn today released a new trailer (below) for their WRC 10 title showing off the Acropolis Rally.
Here is the part of their press statement relevant to that event:
The all-new Anniversary mode in WRC 10 offers rally fans the chance to relive certain famous WRC moments, from 1973 to present day. Behind the wheel of cars from their respective eras, step into the shoes of some of the sport’s best drivers and become a rally legend by completing the many challenges available.
In the Renault Alpine A110, Lancia Delta HF 4WD or maybe the Lancia 037, tackle the Acropolis Rally, one of the historic events included in WRC 10. With winding and dusty mountain roads, sometimes on the edges of cliffs, the Acropolis Rally of Greece is famous for being particularly challenging for drivers. In 2021 it is celebrating its big return to the Championship after an eight-year absence.
As I posted yesterday, WRC 10 will have a Steam demo starting tomorrow under the ‘SteamNextFest’ demo program. Here is more info about that:
During Steam Next Fest, PC players will be able to play an exclusive demo of WRC 10. The demo includes an overview of three completely new rallies that have been added to this season’s calendar: Estonia (gravel), Croatia (asphalt) and Spain (asphalt). Log in to Steam tomorrow for a full overview of the game’s even more realistic driving experience and physics, which were widely acclaimed in WRC 9.
Visit the WRC 10 Steam page from 16 – 22 June.
You can and should wishlist WRC 10 on Steam.
WRC is a leading off-road simulation franchise developed by Kylotonn. Announced on March 19, 2020, this will be their seventh rally title.
