Video game development is full of names that have made groundbreaking steps you’ve never even heard about. Shawn Nash is a behind-the-scenes pioneer responsible for SODA Off Road Racing’s incredible physics, Papyrus’ graphical advancements and iRacing’s use of laser scan data for the physical track surfaces.

This interview with RSC, published in 2021, details his early life and career, through both his own company, Papyrus, Electronic Arts, to his time at iRacing.

Better known today as the developer of Skyrim and Fallout, Bethesda once had a well-respected racing game franchise and were deep into development of a licensed Skip Barber Racing title that never released.

Papyrus today released a patch for the 1996 Mac release of NASCAR Racing. This update fixes some loading crashes, AI having the wrong chassis, paint jobs for Jeff Gordon and Bill Elliott, incorrect calculations in championships and more that was found in v1.0.

Don’t forget to unlock the files mentioned in the readme so they can be overwritten. You can download the 142KB patch from here.

Patch readme:

NASCAR Racing 1.01 Patch

This patch updates NASCAR Racing Full or Minimal install from version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1.

NOTE: When you see “NASCAR Racing Full/Minimal Install folder” please use the folder you installed to your hard drive (either the full install or the minimal install).

Before installing the patch you should backup any saved games or garage settings. It is easiest to load these file and then save them in a folder other than the NASCAR Racing Full/Minimal Install folder Also if you have modified the 1996 car set you should make a duplicate of the car set file before installing the patch (you can click on the duplicate button in the car set menu of NASCAR Racing to make a duplicate of the car set).

You may want to print these instructions before you install the patch. Click on the ‘Copy to clipboard’ button and paste this file into SimpleText from which you can print.

Installing the patch

In order to install the patch you need to know the location of the three files the patch will update.

The file NASCAR Racing is in
NASCAR Racing Full/Minimal Install

The file 1996 Car set is in
NASCAR Racing Full/Minimal Install:Data:Car sets

The file michigan.txt is in
NASCAR Racing Full/Minimal Install:Data:Tracks:Michigan

You must unlock the 1996 car set file BEFORE running the patch (you can unlock the file by unchecking the Read only box in the car set folder).

When you are ready to install the patch click on the patch file and then click on the ‘Patch’ button. The patch program will then prompt you for the location of the above files. If you wish to print the patch information you can click on the ‘Copy to clipboard’ button and then paste this file into SimpleText.

The patch fixes the following problems:

• Some users were unable to install the game because the carset would not load, we have attempted to fix this.
• All Drivers should have the correct chassis now.
• Fixed car paint jobs for for #24 Jeff Gordon and #94 Bill Elliot.
• Championship season points were being calculated incorectly when one person led more than 256 laps, this is now fixed.
• On multiple monitor systems, all screens except main monitor are now blacked out while NASCAR Racing is running.
• In Game Options dialog, items that are already set are now greyed out (i.e. if your monitor is already at 256 colors that check box is greyed out).
• In Driver Info dialog, we added an edit field to allow you to change the driver’s car number.
