As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.

Video game development is full of names that have made groundbreaking steps you’ve never even heard about. Shawn Nash is a behind-the-scenes pioneer responsible for SODA Off Road Racing’s incredible physics, Papyrus’ graphical advancements and iRacing’s use of laser scan data for the physical track surfaces.

This interview with RSC, published in 2021, details his early life and career, through both his own company, Papyrus, Electronic Arts, to his time at iRacing.

Worst kept secret ever! This is the first time a Papyrus NASCAR sim has included Daytona if you do not count the Daytona 500 giveaway last year for N3. Here is the text of the press release:

SIERRA STUDIOS ANNOUNCES THE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF NASCAR(r) WINSTON CUP TRACKS IN NASCAR(r) RACING 4

January 29, 2001 (Bellevue, WA) – From short tracks to superspeedways, Sierra Studios(tm) announced today that NASCAR(r) Racing 4, developed by Massachusetts-based Papyrus Racing Games, will include all 21 tracks from the most recently completed NASCAR(r) Winston Cup season. NASCAR(r) Racing 4 will be the first and only racing game of 2001 to tout the complete collection of tracks. Test your driving skills at tracks such as the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway(r), under the lights at DAYTONA International Speedway(r) or side-by-side racing around one of the most challenging courses on the circuit, Pocono International Raceway(r). No other game has such a complete track offering. NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is scheduled for release in February 2001.

According to Scott Stutsman, Senior Producer at Papyrus Racing Games, “Along with brand new 3D-physics and graphics engines, multi-player support for up to 43 players, and the inclusion of the tracks from the 2000 Winston Cup Series season, NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is the most complete and realistic racing simulation ever offered. Our dedication to making the tracks as detailed and accurate as possible recreates the immersive environments surrounding all 21 courses.”

DAYTONA International Speedway(r), known as The World Center of Racing(r) offers heart-pounding 3-wide racing at 190+ mph, 31 degrees of banking, and “white-knuckle” drafting which requires patience, concentration and the ability to make split second decisions. Don’t lose the draft or you will be left behind. Home of “The Great American Race,” the DAYTONA 500(r), and “The Mid-Summer Classic” the Pepsi 400, this track is a must in any NASCAR(r) Racing simulation.

With the most difficult turn on the circuit varying degrees of banking and three different straightaways, Winston Cup drivers consider Pocono International Raceway(r) to be one of the most challenging and toughest racetracks. Teams spend countless hours in the garage area as they attempt to provide their driver with a solid and comfortable setup. The team that does their homework and is on top of their game will most likely be celebrating in Victory Lane. Do you have what it takes?

NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is the next evolution of the best-selling, award-winning racing series from Papyrus Racing Games. Showcasing a brand new 3D-physics model, realistic body roll, spinning and locking up of individual tires, and the ability to become airborne, along with a new graphics engine, allows for real-time reflections and shadows.
