As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.

Video game development is full of names that have made groundbreaking steps you’ve never even heard about. Shawn Nash is a behind-the-scenes pioneer responsible for SODA Off Road Racing’s incredible physics, Papyrus’ graphical advancements and iRacing’s use of laser scan data for the physical track surfaces.

This interview with RSC, published in 2021, details his early life and career, through both his own company, Papyrus, Electronic Arts, to his time at iRacing.

SIERRA STUDIOS SHOWCASES ALL OF THE CAR MANUFACTURERS, NCLUDING THE NEW DODGE INTREPID R/T, COMPETING IN THE 2001 NASCAR( WINSTON CUP EASON IN NASCAR(r) RACING 4

February 2, 2001 (Bellevue, Washington)- Sierra Studios(tm) is proud to announce another first from the people who brought you the first NASCAR(r) racing simulation game. Adding another element to the unparalleled realism of their upcoming racing simulation, NASCAR(r) Racing 4, developed by Massachusetts-based Papyrus Racing Games, will feature the makes and models of cars that will run the 2001 NASCAR(r) Winston Cup season. No other racing simulation available offers the complete group of car manufacturers. NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is scheduled for release in February 2001.

After being absent from the NASCAR( Winston Cup division for almost two decades, Daimler Chrysler is returning to the track for 2001 by pitting its Dodge Intrepid R/T against the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the Ford Taurus, and the Pontiac Grand Prix. NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is the first racing simulation game to showcase all four brands. The inclusion of the actual car manufacturers means that when you play NASCAR(r) Racing 4, you will see accurate representations of the headlights, grille-work, taillights, and manufacturer decals clearly identifying each car on the track.

“Using real car manufacturers is another example of our dedication to creating a racing experience as realistic as possible,” said Scott Stutsman, Senior Producer at Papyrus Racing Games, “When you consider that we will be the first to offer all the tracks from the 2000 season, along with all of the car manufacturers that will be run in 2001, including the Dodge Intrepid R/T, this is the most realistic and complete NASCAR( racing experience available.”

“When we first began discussions with Papyrus Racing Games, we knew right from the start that we wanted to strategically partner with them to showcase the Dodge Intrepid R/T,” said Bo Puffer, NASCAR(r) Marketing Specialist, “We knew from past experience that Papyrus Racing Games is a perfect fit that will help us build our marketing and licensing program in the software industry.”

NASCAR(r) Racing 4 is the next evolution of the best-selling, award-winning racing series from Papyrus Racing Games, the leader in racing simulation. Showcasing a brand new 3D-physics model, with realistic body roll, spinning and locking up of individual tires, and the ability to become airborne, along with a new graphics engine that allows for real-time reflection and shadows, this is a must for any fan of racing simulations.
