As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.
If you ever played Papyrus’ seminal Grand Prix Legends then you’ve read his name. Rich began working as a tester on NASCAR Racing (1994) and was with Papyrus at the end. In this interview, published in 2022, we discuss his time at the legendary studio and the design of Grand Prix Legends, including initial feelings of hurt at not being asked to join iRacing.

Hasbro Interactive Roars Across the Starting Line With Nascar Titles for the Whole Family
BEVERLY, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 22, 2000–Hasbro Interactive (NYSE:HAS) today released the NASCAR(R) HEAT CD-ROM game, the first in a full line of NASCAR racing titles designed to appeal to every NASCAR fan and racing gamer in the family. As the holiday season approaches, NASCAR HEAT will also be released for the PlayStation(R) game console and the Nintendo(R) Color Game Boy, giving fans of racing games across multiple gaming platforms the thrill of NASCAR. NASCAR HEAT features an adaptive game technology that will have players of all skill levels enjoying an adrenaline-pumping, in-the-pack-racing experience from the first time they play. NASCAR HEAT includes the hottest drivers and tracks in NASCAR today, including the venerable Daytona International Speedway, in a unique stock car racing experience that challenges the player to compete in exclusive “Beat The Heat” challenges with the greatest names in NASCAR. The game’s “Race The Pro” feature allows players to race against actual laps recorded by top NASCAR drivers on the game.
The NASCAR HEAT game will be published by Hasbro Interactive for Windows(R) 95/98 based PCs, the PlayStation and Nintendo Color Game Boy in 2000. In February of 2001 Hasbro Interactive will expand its NASCAR HEAT line with a game for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system that will feature the 2001 NASCAR season.
Based on the popular Saban Entertainment animated series airing on Fox Kids Network, the NASCAR RACERS game brings to life the exciting world of futuristic NASCAR Unlimited Division racing for younger gamers. Kids become their favorite members of team Fastex or Rexcor as they compete in Adventure, Single-Player or Two-Player modes to be the top NASCAR driver of the future.
The NASCAR RACERS game will be available for Windows(R) 95/98 based PCs, the PlayStation and Nintendo Color Game Boy starting in October.
