Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?
As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.

In a recent visit to Boston, Inside Mac Games had a chance to sit down with three of the principals involved in the development of Papyrus Design Group’s IndyCar Racing II for the Macintosh. The folks at Papyrus, technically based in Somerville, MA, are the creators of the award winning PC simulations IndyCar Racing and NASCAR Racing. They are in the process of bringing these great simulations to the Macintosh. IndyCar Racing II will be released for the Mac in time for the Christmas season, and NASCAR Racing is due to hit the stores in the first quarter of 1996. We spoke with company president, Omar Khudari, who, along with David Kaemmer, started the company in his Cambridge kitchen in 1987 with a “war chest” of $2000. Papyrus now has about 80 employees and is growing steadily with sales last year of about $6 million. IMG also spoke with Rick Genter, the Technical Lead for IndyCar Racing II and NASCAR Racing, and Todd Farrington, the producer for IndyCar Racing II and NASCAR Racing.
You can see all the answered edited into a single video below. Here are the questions asked prior to each clip:
IMG to Khudari: What brings Papyrus to the Mac market after years of being a PC only developer?
IMG to Khudari: Indy Car Racing II will be released on the PC and Mac around the same time. Are there any advantages of releasing titles simultaneously across platforms?
IMG to Khudari: Can you give us any hints about Papyrus’ plans for the Mac market in the future?
IMG to Genter: How do you feel about the future of the PowerMac?
IMG to Genter: In the next few years, what is the PowerMac going to mean to the Mac games market?
IMG to Genter: Can you tell us about some Mac specific features in IndyCar II?
IMG to Genter: What attracts you to programming on the Macintosh?
IMG to Farrington: What makes IndyCar II more of a simulation rather than an arcade game?
