The Mac version of IndyCar Racing II was today released by Papyrus as a combined CD-ROM version along with the Windows 95 v1.1 version re-release (though the CD does also include the DOS version). While the CD-ROM says v1.1 it actually is v1.01 of the Mac PowerPC release as the v1.1 label applies to the Windows version of the software only.

Differences on the Mac include small changes to the carset, mouse control for steering, voice control for setup, tire and fuel changes during pit stops, an unlimited framerate and the ability to directly export replays as Quicktime movies. You can download the demo to check it out for yourself, and I have included the full v1.0 readme file at the bottom of this news post so you can see the system requirements direct from the developers.

IndyCar Racing II

Power Macintosh Version 1.0.1

Thank you for purchasing the Power Macintosh version of IndyCar Racing II. Your support will help ensure the success of future Macintosh versions of Sierra/Papyrus products.

This Read-Me contains important information on late updates or changes that may have occurred since the manual or other documentation were finalized. It also contains a section on Installation, a section on Multiplayer Issues, and a short section on optimizing your Mac for the best possible gameplay speed in IndyCar Racing II.

Version 1.0.1 fixes the following known problems in Version 1.0.0

• Added minimum install option

• Added direct support for the Mac ThrustMaster Formula T2 Steering Wheel/Pedals Controller.

• A cosmetic problem in the car sets dialog that occured when car sets were duplicated.

• The program now unlocks the modem configurations file when it opens it for display in the Communications dialog.

• A crash bug that would occur at ovals during multiplayer qualify where the joiner car finished qualifying before the sponsor is now fixed.

• A bug where the Macintosh version could not sponsor races for DOS/Windows95 versions of IndyCar Racing II has been fixed.

• The program now checks to see if there is enough RAM free to load the intro and displays the appropriate dialog if there is not.

• There is a known problem with the way the car sets file interacts with some versions of system software. The problem can also occur if the Car Sets file becomes corrupt. If the program asks you to load a car set and then does not let you choose the car set in the CAR SETS folder you can do the following. First trash the IndyCar Racing II Preferences in the preferences folder of your system. Now copy the car set file from the IndyCar Racing II CD over the old car sets file. You will find it in the folder DATA inside the MACINTOSH folder on the CD. After the file is copied you have to unlock the file. Just click on the Car Sets and go to GET INFO from the FILE menu, if there is an X in the box marked locked click on it to remove locking. This should resolve the problem ;if not, you may need to reinstall IndyCar Racing II, after first deleting the IndyCar Racing II Preference file. You may also want to consider updating your system software to the latest version. Consult your system manual for information on how to update your system software.

Installation

Installing IndyCar Racing II is just like installing any other Macintosh application or game. If you are familiar with the standard installer, then you don’t need to read the Installation Section.

1. Insert the IndyCar Racing II CD into your CD-ROM Drive. (Make sure that the Apple CD-ROM and Foreign File Access extensions are loading when you start your Mac by opening the Extensions Manager and placing a check-mark next to them. If they are not currently checked, you’ll need to restart your Mac to load them with the rest of your extensions.) If you’re reading this, you probably can handle this part. ; )

2. The IndyCar2 disk will appear and open a window showing the Installer.

3. Double-Click on the Installer Icon. It will launch the Installer application and let you select the destination drive and folder. If you are unsure about how to select drives and folders, please consult the documentation that came with your Macintosh.

Easy Install

Easy Install will install a complete installation of IndyCar Racing II on your hard drive. The complete Installation is approximately 45 MB total.

Custom Install

The custom Install will allow you to choose the minimum install option. Minimum install will place only the most important files on your hard drive. Minimum install will make track load times longer, but it only requires 8 MB of hard disk space. You will need your IndyCar Racing II CD in your CD-ROM drive in order to play the game.

Getting started file:

Getting Started

IndyCar Racing II 1.0.1

Power Macintosh Version

The best way to get started in IndyCar Racing II is to check a few things before you launch the program. While you can drive from the keyboard or with the mouse, a joystick, or, if you’re serious about top performance driving, a steering wheel controller, will make your IndyCar Racing II experience much more enjoyable and fun. You can turn pretty good laps at oval racetracks using the keyboard or the mouse, but for top performance, you need a joystick or steering wheel. While it used to be that all of the joysticks on the market were for IBM-compatible PCs, this is no longer the case. IndyCar Racing II supports and recognizes the latest Macintosh joysticks from the leading joystick controller companies (CH Products, Gravis). We recommend using your joystick in IndyCar Racing II if you already have one, and purchasing one to use with the game if you don’t. You won’t regret it.

Controls Setup

If you don’t have a joystick or steering wheel, but will be driving with the mouse or keyboard, you can skip ahead to the section on Setting Controls.

Joystick Setup

In order to use your joystick in IndyCar Racing II, you’ll need to make sure that it’s Control Panel or Extensions are installed and loading on your system. If you are unsure of how to check this, please consult the documentation that came with your joystick or contact your joystick’s manufacturer.

Most joystick control panels have a way to add or select a game to a list of games in your joystick control panel. IndyCar Racing II directly supports all CH Products and Gravis joysticks. If you have another type of joystick you should use the joystick’s control panel to configure it for IndyCar Racing II. If you are unsure of how to do this, please consult the documentation that came with your joystick or contact your joystick’s manufacturer.

Once you’ve completed this step, restart your computer and launch IndyCar Racing II. If your joystick is recognized by IndyCar Racing II, you will be prompted to calibrate it. Move the joystick to its furthest extents in all directions and then release it, letting it center itself. Some joysticks have dials or screws you can adjust to fine-tune their centering. If your joystick has such features you should use them to center your joystick as carefully as possible. Then hit “OK” with the mouse to finish calibrating your joystick.

Setting Controls

IndyCar Racing II will go through the Introduction sequence. After you finish watching the intro sequence, you can dismiss it by hitting the mouse button or any key from the keyboard. Then, from the Main Menu, select Set Controls from the Options Menu. This will bring up the dialog box where you can specify which controls you wish to drive with. For example, many people prefer to drive with the horizontal axis of the joystick as steering left and right, the trigger button as the gas, the thumb button as the brake, and pulling the joystick toward them as reverse. For mouse or keyboard steering you’ll need to click the Modify button to setup your controls accordingly. For more information of setting your controls, please consult your IndyCar Racing II manual or use the IndyCar II Guide help utility by hitting the Help Button in the Set Controls dialog. IndyCar Racing II defaults to mouse steering, so that is what will be active the first time you launch it.
