As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.

If you ever played Papyrus’ seminal Grand Prix Legends then you’ve read his name. Rich began working as a tester on NASCAR Racing (1994) and was with Papyrus at the end. In this interview, published in 2022, we discuss his time at the legendary studio and the design of Grand Prix Legends, including initial feelings of hurt at not being asked to join iRacing.

Frontier have released an update for F1 Manager 2022 that fixes a few issues that should actually make a decent difference to gameplay. The most notable, the first line in the changelog below, is interesting as I interpret that to mean that when the track changes from dry to wet (or vice-versa) a car on the wrong tire will no longer block those on the correct tire as they’ll now be able to properly use their speed.

Changelog:

Race Simulation

– Improvements to overtaking cars on inappropriate tyres for the current track conditions
– Improvements to weather temperature prediction towards the end of Practice and Qualifying sessions
– Fixed an error with Qualifying positions when times are within 0.001 of a second.

UI

– Fixed softlock when navigating off the bottom of the standings panel during Practice session
– Fixed UI highlight disappearing when navigating the settings menu

Localisation

– Fix for incorrect Italian string when scouting for reserve drivers

I don't know what this patch did but I'm definitely still not over taking cars on the wrong tires

Someone commented that on social media, too. That's a shame. I'm not sure what else to interpret this line of their changelog as? "Improvements to overtaking cars on inappropriate tyres for the current track conditions".

Maybe like in the past they will EVENTUALLY fix this properly...

I don't know how sales went for the '22 game but I tend to wonder at what point they switch attention to the '23 edition. I mention sales because I would imagine that will determine whether there will even be a '23 version.

There are certainly a number of areas to improve, but is a one year turn around enough?

I think they switched very early and also this may be a part of their communications issues. I wonder if some of the things they have said are being fixed or are fixed for 22 were actually fixed for 23 and they just for their wires crossed...
