An Interview with Terence Groening; Master of Physics

Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.

This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.

Microprose announced Ultimate Race Pro for Spring, 1998 release. Check out the information below:

ULTIM@TE RACE PRO™

Current Planned Availability: Spring 1998

Platform: Windows 95

Audience: Action and Racing Gamers

Product Description:

Ultim@te Race Pro is a slick action racing game for the PC for gamers who crave hot cars and fast action! Screaming through city streets and country roads, the player will redline one of 16 monster street cars. Neck and neck, the player and his opponents will barrel through a real-time 3-D rendering of twisting, turning roads. Featuring gameplay for up to 16 players over the Internet, stunning graphics, multiple weather conditions and a highly entertaining destruction arena, players will race through city streets, country roads and dessert terrain. Up to 16 players will further be challenged by random driving conditions, including rain, thunderstorms, fog, sun glare and changing times of the day.

Ultim@te Race Pro is screamingly fast — running at 25 frames per second — and has vivid scaleable color depth and screen resolution. The awesome visual effects will take your driving experience to the limit! Some of the special effects include lens flare, projected shadows for both cars and backgrounds, 3-D sky, smoke, transparency and car damage. Developed by Kalisto Entertainment, this game takes full advantage of advanced real-time 3-D technology to present a unique racing experience and arcade visual effects on the PC.

Key features:

— Special Effects and Stunning Graphics – The game features give the player a true-to-life experience including smoke and skidmarks on the road as the player “peels out,” realistic projected shadows for both cars and backgrounds, ground projections, sparks that fly and much more. Graphics support will be included for 3Dfx, Power VR and Direct3D. Distance hazing and shadow clarity along with a supporting cast of various graphics options will make this a game that can be easily optimized for any machine.

— 16 Racetracks – Ultim@te Race Pro offers the player the choice of driving on four distinct tracks with variations for each track to equal 16 track options. The player can reverse the race direction, flip the track (mirror image), choose day, night or dusk and choose the weather conditions. The four basic tracks are the West Coast/Long Beach race, the Midwest race (think Dorothy after the tornado), the Southwest race (dodge of the scorpions) and the Dordogne race (the European entry).

— Multiplayer Option – Play with up to 16 players via LAN, modem or Internet. Ultim@te Race Pro is the first action racing game to offer Internet play in a destruction derby arena! One of five different racing options in the game, the multiplayer destruction derby race is an especially awesome highlight of this fast furious “smash ’em up” game.

Ultim@te Race Pro is a trademark of Kalisto Technologies.
