Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?
Better known today as the developer of Skyrim and Fallout, Bethesda once had a well-respected racing game franchise and were deep into development of a licensed Skip Barber Racing title that never released.
As announced back on March 3, 2021, Motorsport Games has been working on completing the acquisition of Studio 397 the past couple of months. They announced today that they’ve done it; they own rFactor 2 and Studio 397. The press release has some interesting news which I will sum up for you:
– For over a year Studio 397 has been providing physics, tire modeling and AI for upcoming reboot of the NASCAR video game franchise, due for release later in 2021
– rFactor 2-powered physics will be coming to NASCAR game on consoles
– Studio 397 will maintain its brand and name while continuing to develop the rFactor 2 platform
– Studio 397 will be working on other Motorsport Games titles
– Studio 397 will also be “central to” forthcoming British Touring Car Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans titles
So there we have it… This is a pretty massive power move for all involved. We’ve learned that there is going to officially be a “24 Hours of Le Mans” title, that rFactor 2 physics will likely be in the BTCC title, certainly be in the next NASCAR title, and that the physics from rF2 will be seen on consoles (which isn’t that much of an issue anymore, see Assetto Corsa Competizione).

For over a year, the Netherlands-based developer has been providing its expertise in vehicle physics, tire modeling and AI for Motorsport Games’ upcoming reboot of the NASCAR video game franchise, due for release later in 2021. Studio 397 will also be central to the development of Motorsport Games’ forthcoming titles based upon licenses including the British Touring Car Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The incredibly successful 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual race and the Formula E Race at Home Challenge – both of which were operated by Motorsport Games – each raced using rFactor 2, which will now be the platform of choice for future esports events and projects.
