As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.

Shortly after the release of Grand Prix Legends the sim racing community looked forward to another title that promised to offer a similar insight into historic racing. Trans-Am Racing ’68-’72 ultimately never released, a victim of a publishers shady dealings, but as a part of my research I uncovered a VHS of a never-released trailer for the game. Watch the trailer and read about what sim racing missed out on.

Papyrus announced today that they will be releasing the NASCAR Racing – 1999 Edition Truck Series as a standalone Truck-only product. For $20 it’s not a bad deal, but it’s a shame people might miss out on the other two car types in the full product.

Press release:

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing from Papyrus Design Group Puts Fans Behind the Wheel of a NASCAR Craftsman Truck
First simulation of NASCAR Craftsman Truck competitive series provides a realistic experience of driving, authentic tracks, teams and drivers

WATERTOWN, Mass.-April 5, 1999 – Sierra On-Line, the leader in PC sports simulations, today announced the release of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing, the latest version in its NASCAR family of racing simulations. For the first time, racing enthusiasts can experience the thrill of driving a NASCAR Craftsman Truck.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing was developed by the award winning Papyrus Design Group as part of NASCAR Racing-1999 Edition. NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing, the first stand alone truck title available to consumers, features the most realistic physics engine in driving simulations today. Drivers can now experience the 700 horsepower NASCAR Craftsman Trucks and speed around the 1998 season’s licensed tracks. The NASCAR competitive series is complete with 8 tracks never before available in a racing simulation including, I-70 Speedway, Mesa Marin Raceway, Flemington Speedway, Heartland Park Topeka, Portland Speedway, Louisville Motor Speedway, Evergreen Speedway and Memphis Motorsports Park.

“NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing is a full featured simulation of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series,” said Dave Matson, project director. “We’ve faithfully recreated the unique feel of driving a NASCAR Craftsman Truck on the authentic NASCAR tracks, and delivered the product at a very affordable price.”

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Racing is the first simulation of its kind, combining realistic truck models with precise engine replicas. Drivers enjoy the extensive set up options as well as the ability to compete against the series’ top drivers, including Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday, Jr., the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion. Other noteworthy features include a crew chief and spotter that alert drivers to track conditions, a full-feature paint shop to customize trucks and an easy-to-drive arcade mode for beginners.

“We are excited to expand our relationship with Papyrus to include the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series,” said Blake Davidson, Director of Marketing Technology for NASCAR. “Fans will now have an opportunity to experience the tough trucks of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.”
