If you ever played Papyrus’ seminal Grand Prix Legends then you’ve read his name. Rich began working as a tester on NASCAR Racing (1994) and was with Papyrus at the end. In this interview, published in 2022, we discuss his time at the legendary studio and the design of Grand Prix Legends, including initial feelings of hurt at not being asked to join iRacing.
As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.
Frontier have posted a logo and branding sheet on social media that you can see below. This image includes the F1 Manager 23 logo itself, along with the Frontier Developments logo as well as the F1, F2 and F3 series logos that were also present on F1 Manager 22 branding.
The 2023 entry in this franchise was confirmed long before most people even knew Frontier held the F1 license when they announced in their financial results that they had signed a deal to produce four F1 management games back in 2020. Going back to the financial results once again, this time looking back at F1 Manager 22, here are the notable mentions in the FY23 Interim Results:
– Player engagement at release in August 2022 and during the initial period after release was strong, and broadly in-line with original expectations
– Over 600,000 units have been sold to date across PC, Xbox and PlayStation, including both digital and physical unit sales on console
– Metacritic ratings are between 74 and 80 across the three platforms
– Unfortunately, sales performance during key holiday season price promotions (after the reported period) fell materially below original expectations, as reported in the trading update on 9 January 2023, potentially due in part to increased player price sensitivity related to worsening economic conditions
– F1® Manager 2022 remains a good first game in an important new annual franchise for Frontier
– We will continue to enhance the F1® Manager franchise over the coming years on the solid foundations provided by the first game
Overall this is a solid first title in their franchise and I absolutely agree that they can build on it and improve. I think the main issue it faced was in tempering the often unreasonable expectations of users and meanwhile not pandering to the demands of those same people. I obviously knew going into this that it was a yearly franchise, but many expected them to release one game and to offer it never-ending updates. Still, I enjoyed F1 Manager 22 deeply for what it was… Read my review.
