Video game development is full of names that have made groundbreaking steps you’ve never even heard about. Shawn Nash is a behind-the-scenes pioneer responsible for SODA Off Road Racing’s incredible physics, Papyrus’ graphical advancements and iRacing’s use of laser scan data for the physical track surfaces.
This interview with RSC, published in 2021, details his early life and career, through both his own company, Papyrus, Electronic Arts, to his time at iRacing.
As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.
EA today posted a gameplay preview video that shows raw gameplay footage at the Estonia, Japan and Sweden Rallies in the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 HYBRID, Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, and Ford Fiesta Rally3. The differing lighting and weather conditions include snow, rain, overcast, partly cloudy and clear with day and night lighting, as well as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter scenery.
It’s quite a good sign that they are prepared to post this much raw in-game footage at this time. I can’t say that I see any real physics issues in the video other than some floaty look of the handling at about 50s that may be an effect of the ice and snow. You can see the timestamps below the video embed.
