Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.
This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.
Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?
If you were around on the RSC forums back in the early 2000’s you’ll probably be familiar with GeneRally – the top-down racing game similar to Indy Heat or Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s Super Off Road that supported modding and had a bustling little community going. Well, after an unfortunately failed Kickstarter back in 2014 GeneRally is back with a sequel that you can now wishlist on Steam. GeneRally 1 is also still available to download here.

Key Features
– Experience a wide variety of fun and interesting tracks created by us, by the GeneRally 2 community – or make the perfect track for you in our track editor.
– Race against the clock (and the ghost car) in time-trial; against the AI; or with friends in couch PvP (online multiplayer coming later). There’s no need for split screen – the whole track is visible at once – so grab your friends and family, and get racing!
– The easy-to-use track editor has everything you need to get creative. With 43 objects (and more being added all the time); 12 different surface types (from dirt and gravel, to snow and ice); and a feature-packed terrain-editing tool – the only limit is your imagination!
– Plan your pitstops and manage your fuel, tyre wear and damage over the course of the race – or turn all of those off and enjoy unlimited ability to run your friends off the road!
– With a variety of different cars, each with their own unique performance and handling characteristics, there’s never a dull moment.
– The car physics take account of many different real-world parameters like drive-train type (FWD/RWD/AWD), suspension travel/rebound, weight distribution and more! The cars are easy-to-learn but hard-to-master.We’ll add more to this list as development progresses :)
