Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?

Shortly after the release of Grand Prix Legends the sim racing community looked forward to another title that promised to offer a similar insight into historic racing. Trans-Am Racing ’68-’72 ultimately never released, a victim of a publishers shady dealings, but as a part of my research I uncovered a VHS of a never-released trailer for the game. Watch the trailer and read about what sim racing missed out on.

Just over a month ago I noticed the extended radio silence from the Dakar Rally license holder and posted about the lost Asobo-developed Rally Raid title that was never released. Today Saber Interactive broke their silence and posted a trailer and a decent amount of information on their upcoming ‘Dakar Desert Rally’ title that looks remarkably similar to that unrealized dream.

Shockingly similar, eh? There’s a decent amount of information on their Web site. I have tried to collate the information together for you:

– 2022 release.
– PS4, PS5, XBOX One, XBox Series X/S, Steam and Epic Store are listed.
– Single player career and online multiplayer.
– 30 stages from the 2020 and 2021 Dakar Rally races.
– Officially licensed vehicles, teams, drivers and riders.
– 150+ vehicles from 5 categories (cars, bikes, trucks, quads and SSVs).
– “Vast open world” Saudi Arabian environments.
– Seasons (shows snow).
– Dynamic weather (sandstorms, rain).
– Dynamic surfaces (deep mud).
– Dynamic lighting (day/night cycle).
– Official road books (stage notes, basically).

Here is their product synopsis:
