Video game development is rarely about one man, but if it was, then Terence Groening should certainly get a mention for his contributions to the genre as the man responsible for the physics of Sportscar GT, EA’s PC F1 and NASCAR games of the early 2000’s, rFactor, rFactor 2 and every title and rFpro simulator that spawned from ISI’s engine.
This interview with RSC details his early life and career, through to him joining iRacing in 2021.
As a direct ancestor of iRacing, the ‘Grand Prix Legends engine’ had multiple stock car racing false starts, before eventually releasing as NASCAR Racing 4. The original NASCAR 3, cancelled and replaced by one that used NASCAR 2’s engine, is barely remembered.
I’m late to the party on this one by a few months because although I saw it last year, I didn’t post about it. Someone I follow replied to a tweet today and led me back down the rabbit hole… So here’s the news I think you should know from last September:
An Alpha version demo has been released of ‘Over Jump Rally’, which is a spectacular remake of SEGA Rally built to ultra modern standards. The developer, Alessandro Schiassi, is hoping that SEGA will pick it up and they can officially license the brands it is based on, but until then ‘Over Jump Rally’ it is. Obviously by today’s standards the physics are simplistic, but back in 1994 they felt among the best and yet completely accessible to anyone who grabbed the steering wheel. That gameplay standard has been retained.

What’s really interesting, especially as someone who played the title this is based on in arcades and on the SEGA Saturn (the first console I bought, specifically for SEGA Rally), is the choice the developer has made in graphics. The gameplay video below these screenshots clearly shows the faithful recreation of a car and course where the general design of the track is exactly the same but clearly shows the advancements made in technology within the intervening years. Absolutely love that.
