Video game development is full of names that have made groundbreaking steps you’ve never even heard about. Shawn Nash is a behind-the-scenes pioneer responsible for SODA Off Road Racing’s incredible physics, Papyrus’ graphical advancements and iRacing’s use of laser scan data for the physical track surfaces.

This interview with RSC, published in 2021, details his early life and career, through both his own company, Papyrus, Electronic Arts, to his time at iRacing.

If you ever played Papyrus’ seminal Grand Prix Legends then you’ve read his name. Rich began working as a tester on NASCAR Racing (1994) and was with Papyrus at the end. In this interview, published in 2022, we discuss his time at the legendary studio and the design of Grand Prix Legends, including initial feelings of hurt at not being asked to join iRacing.

Nano Games have released their Heavy Duty Challenge simulator on Steam today where it can currently be purchased for 10% off. You can see features, my mini-review, screenshots and a trailer below.

Key Features:
– Truck Trial Championship and open world off-road driving
– 12 realistic trucks with cabin view
– Official license of the Europa Truck Trial League
– Damage and repair systems
– Truck upgrade and improvement systems
– Online leaderboards
– Ultra-realistic state-of-the-art physics simulation
– Gamepad and steering wheel

I received a free Steam key for HDC yesterday and had some time with it last night hoping to get out a video on it. I’m very impressed by the physics of the simulation and the overall driving experience, but the framerate was really bad on my system – bad enough that footage and a video was out of the question. While this experience doesn’t seem to be universal, there is a thread already on the Steam forum and performance is mentioned in some reviews.

I think, as a mini-review, I’d certainly go ahead and buy this if it is the kind of product you wish to support. While it might be easy to compare to SnowRunner, it differs is so many ways that it’s not really right to do so because this is a real-world sport and the game contains real licensed vehicles from that European Truck Trial Championship. It’s very cool to see the tires deform over pointy rocks and I genuinely am impressed by the vehicle physics.

You may want to make use of the Steam refund window and try it out, especially as the wheel support appears to be basic (though it did work for me).
