Shortly after the release of Grand Prix Legends the sim racing community looked forward to another title that promised to offer a similar insight into historic racing. Trans-Am Racing ’68-’72 ultimately never released, a victim of a publishers shady dealings, but as a part of my research I uncovered a VHS of a never-released trailer for the game. Watch the trailer and read about what sim racing missed out on.

Asobo, known today as the Microsoft Flight Simulator developer, created groundbreaking technology for large scale maps that was intended to be used in a high quality rally raid title. It was never released and ended up as FUEL, a post-apocalyptic open-world racing game. What happened?

Posting this item late due to sickness. Apologies for the gap in coverage (whole of February, 2024).

Last month Fanatec announced a new Gran Turismo branded Direct Drive steering wheel that appears to be combined with the existing 15Nm Clubsport DD+ Wheel Base that retails for $1299.95. The Clubsport DD+ alone usually retails for $999.95 without a steering wheel rim.

Fanatec were experiencing a delay in Sony approval for the Clubsport DD+ that has been resolved. Both the standard Clubsport DD+ and this Gran Turismo DD Extreme wheel bundle are shipping to customers now.

Press release:

Fanatec launches the ultimate Gran Turismo Direct Drive system in partnership with Polyphony Digital: The Gran Turismo DD Extreme

Landshut, February 9, 2024 – Developed alongside Polyphony Digital, a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and under the official licensing and approval of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Fanatec is launching the Gran Turismo DD® Extreme. This is the most powerful official Direct Drive system for Gran Turismo®, combining an advanced Steering Wheel together with the new 15Nm ClubSport DD+ Wheel Base, to deliver consistent performance and incredibly realistic force feedback.

Gran Turismo DD® Extreme is the ultimate way to experience Gran Turismo® 7. The fully round, multi-purpose Steering Wheel looks and feels realistic with its premium vegan leather grip and 300 mm diameter. Gran Turismo®-specific inputs are covered with four 5-way directional sticks, and the wheel looks stunning with RGB FlagLEDs, diffused RevLED strip, RGB LED rings, and a 2.7” OLED display.

Designed from the ground-up for the latest generation QR2 quick release, the Steering Wheel transmits the finest details from the Direct Drive motor and Fanatec’s FullForce technology to the driver’s hands.

The beating heart of the Gran Turismo DD® Extreme is the new ClubSport DD+ Wheel Base – a cutting-edge 15 Nm Direct Drive force feedback device designed from the ground-up for the most demanding sim racers.

The performance of the ClubSport DD+ servo motor and advanced electronics has allowed Fanatec to fine-tune its behaviour with incredible accuracy. The wheel feels lively in your hands, communicating the smallest details, while staying remarkably stable (resistant to unwanted oscillation).

The ClubSport DD+ is passively cooled and engineered to strict requirements, making it the most thermally stable Wheel Base in its class, thus delivering consistent, unwavering performance across even the longest and most gruelling races.

Class-leading slew rate performance combined with the powerful processor makes every motor reaction incredibly fast and dynamic. This benefits traditional force feedback signals as well as enhanced FullForce signals (in supported games).

FullForce technology is a new force feedback protocol tailored specifically and exclusively for Fanatec Direct Drive and the ultra-tight mechanical connection of the QR2 quick release. FullForce leverages the instantaneous response and zero backlash of Direct Drive technology, delivering high-frequency vibrations and a new level of immersion. Gran Turismo® 7 is planned to support FullForce in a future software update.

The Gran Turismo DD® Extreme package supports all modern Fanatec Pedals and accessories such as Shifters and Handbrakes (all sold separately).

Gain the edge in Gran Turismo with authenticity and style thanks to Fanatec Gran Turismo® DD Extreme, available for €1299.95.

Immerse yourself in the Extreme.
